Thanksgiving at the Beach

Every other year my family spends Thanksgiving at the beach in North Carolina. We go there with another family with whom we are very close and we spend the week playing disc golf in the mornings, drinking beer and playing corn hole in the afternoons and kicking off dinner every night with a bunch of oysters and icy cold gin martinis. And then the real feasting begins. One day its a 20 hour smoked pork shoulder or a thanksgiving turkey from the smoker, shrimp and sausages and fajitas from the kitchen, and of course leftovers for days for lunch. It gets harder and harder to leave every time we go!

Be A Good Wing Man

Well folks, we've made it to yet another Thanksgiving. The gateway drug of the holiday season. The beginning of the end. We drudged through winter, swam through spring and sweat through summer just to get here. Ghosts and ghouls have flown through town and scared away the lingering pockets of August heat, carelessly taking the beautiful golden and rusted leaves with them. The only things left to harvest are the coats from our closets and the decorations from our attics. With the birds migrating south and the Sun taking off work earlier each day, nature is gently pushing us inward, compelling us to gather indoors and huddle close to each other until ...

Arepera Guacuco

The Guacuco Experience Only a block away from Maria Hernandez Park off of Irving Avenue in Bushwick, the Venezuelan arepera, Guacuco, echoes the lively communal energy that emanates from the park just down the street. From the kitchen literally being a part of the dining room to the high ceilings and open layout of the bar and tables, the vibe inside Guacuco immediately says, "Come as you are--grab a drink and enjoy some home cooking from the Venezuelan family you never had." Truly a family affair, the owner, Leonardo Molina, has entrusted the menu to the best chef he knows: his mother Carmen. And the personal touch doesn't stop there, even ...

Mexicali Blues

In many ways, the sound of silence can be most rewarding whilst at the dinner table. A once chatty group, a veritable snowball of conversation, growing in size (and volume) as each new topic or joke or story is added to the mix, is now silenced by a strange and overwhelming force. Dinner has been served and we’ve all shut up. I know tonight’s offering is especially hitting the spot as myself and my dinner mates have failed to utter a single word since the plates hit the table. What a welcome relief this silence truly is. It’s been a hard week. We’ve all come to this table hoping that a little conversation and chow might begin to restore ...
